About

Scott Kaplan
skaplan@xx1090sandiego.com

Scott was an undrafted free agent kicker, making him a first generation undrafted free agent kicker. His father, Charlie, was an excellent high school skier in New York. His mother, Sheila, has had an excellent career as a professional yenta. Scott was in NFL training camps with the San Diego Chargers in 1993, the Detroit Lions in 1994, and the Chicago Bears in 1995. Considering Kaplan never played in a regular season game, it’s somewhat sad that more than ten years after the fact, this information is still in his bio.

While at the University of Pittsburgh from 1988 to 1992, Kaplan was consistently inconsistent as the Panthers place kicker. He was an All Big East Conference selection in 1990. Other than that, his claim to fame in the Pitt record books was the four field goals he missed vs. Minnesota, in a dome! Kaplan is in the top ten scoring all time at Pitt, tied with Craig ‘Ironhead’ Heyward, and on the same all time scoring list that features Tony Dorsett. In 2002, Kaplan was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, which resides in the hallway of the Jewish Community Center in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh.

Besides serving as the brilliant host of the Scott and BR Show, Scott has for the past six years worked as a sideline girl for CBS’ coverage of both college football and the NFL. This season however, is the first Scott is getting to truly enjoy football as a fan, and you can find him at the party bus for all Charger home games.

Scott is married to his wife of seven years, Gayle. Scott and his wife have four children… Justin (10), Jillian (8) , Jadyn (6) and Julia (3).

Billy Ray Smith

Billy Ray was a first-round draft choice of the San Diego Chargers (5th pick overall), making him a second-generation NFL defender. His father, Billy Ray Smith, Sr. was a 13-year pro for the Rams, Steelers and Colts. His mother, Carroll, had a brilliant – albeit brief stint at nose tackle for the Detroit Lions in the late 50’s. B.R. played his entire ten year career in San Diego, during which he was named Team MVP in 1987, and Team Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986. When you consider how bad the Charger defenses were in those years, that really isn’t all that impressive.

At the University of Arkansas, he was a two-time consensus All-American selection, earning the honors in 1981 and 1982. In 1982, he served as team captain, leading Arkansas to a 9-2-1 record and a victory over Florida in the Bluebonnet Bowl. He finished his career with 299 total tackles and still holds the Arkansas record for career tackles for loss, with 63. Then again, his entire collegiate career took place in a conference (the Southwest Conference) that doesn’t even exist anymore, so did it ever really happen? He was a member of the Arkansas All-Decade Team and, in 1993, was voted into the Arkansas All-Century Team. Later, he was inducted into both the Arkansas State Hall of Fame and the Razorback Hall of Honor. Billy Ray Smith, Jr. was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

If you would like to contact B.R., you don’t have a chance during the football season. In addition to the radio brilliance on XX1090, B.R. has run out of candles to burn on both ends as the Charger pre-season analyst, Fox Sports Net’s College Football Saturday analyst, Charger Power Report analyst on XETV Fox 6, Charger Preview host on Channel 4 San Diego, and the Special Consultant to Mayor Sanders on Stadium Issues.

B.R. got his start in broadcasting as a local sports reporter and anchor in the mid-1990s. He also served as the color commentator for the UCLA Bruins on the Bruins radio network for four seasons (1997-2000).

Smith and his wife, 10news anchor Kimberly Hunt have a daughter, Savannah.

John “Pratty Boy” Pratt
jpratt@xx1090sandiego.com

Pratty got his start with Scott & BR as a camera man for their Cox Channel 4 TV show. After the show was canceled, he continued to film and edit videos for the Scott & BR website before he got his start in radio as an intern for the show. He made daily Starbucks runs for over 6 months until XX1090 finally offered him a job producing Padre Games on the weekends. When former Scott & BR Show Producer Ryan Schulze resigned from the show, Pratty took over the reigns running the board, playing sound effects and writing segments. In his spare time Pratty enjoys getting concussions while snowboarding, skydiving, going to the beach and attending Charger and Padre games.
